Berkeley Lab Distinguished Scientist Art Rosenfeld Wins Global Energy Prize

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Distinguished Scientist Art Rosenfeld has been awarded the Global Energy International Prize for his contributions to the field of energy efficiency. In announcing the prize, the organization said: “Arthur Rosenfeld is known for his innovation and technological research in the field of construction of energy-efficient buildings.”

Somorjai Wins Frontiers of Knowledge Award

Berkeley Lab’s Gabor Somorjai, widely considered the “father of modern surface chemistry,” has won a Frontiers of Knowledge Award from Spain’s BBVA Foundation. He was recognized for “his pioneering contributions to the understanding of surface chemistry and catalysis at a microscopic and molecular level.”

Berkeley Lab scientists Gavin Crooks and Trent Northen have been named by President Barack Obama to receive the prestigious Presidential Early Career for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) Award, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on early-career researchers.

Two Berkeley Lab Mathematicians Awarded Prestigious Math Prizes

Berkeley Lab’s Alexandre Chorin (left) and James Sethian won prestigious prizes from the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) for groundbreaking work in applied math, with impacts ranging from fluid mechanics and aerodynamics to medical imaging and semiconductor manufacturing. Chorin won the Lagrange Prize and Sethian won the Pioneer Prize. The awards bring to Berkeley Lab two of the five math prizes the ICIAM awards every four years.

Berkeley Lab Wins Four 2010 R&D 100 Awards

Four inventions from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have been recognized with the R&D 100 award for 2010 from R&D Magazine, which recognizes the 100 most significant proven technological advances of the year. “The large number of winners from the Department of Energy’s national labs every year is a clear sign that our labs are doing some of the most innovative research in the world,” said Energy Secretary Steven Chu.

Berkeley Lab researcher honored with E.O. Lawrence Fellowship

Berkeley Lab’s Aaron Albers is a 2010 recipient of the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Fellowship, which recognizes outstanding individuals from historically underrepresented groups in emerging scientific research. Albers is studying fundamental mechanisms in cancer—“a massive, complex problem that’s hugely challenging, and yet allows for truly high-risk, high-reward science.”

Two Berkeley Lab Researchers Elected to National Academy of Sciences Class of 2010

Two Berkeley Lab researchers, Mina Bissell, Distinguished Scientist and acclaimed breast cancer researcher, and Alexis Bell, chemical engineer and leading authority on catalysis, have been elected to National Academy of Sciences class of 2010. Their election brings the total number of Berkeley Lab NAS members to 63.

Five Berkeley Lab Researchers Elected to NAE

February 17, 2010

Five researchers affiliated with Berkeley Lab have been elected into the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), one of the highest professional honors accorded to an engineer. Joining this year’s class of 68 new members and nine foreign associates were Lisa Alvarez-Cohen, Eugene Haller, Jay Keasling, Art Rosenfeld and Xiang Zhang.
