A COSMIC Approach to Nanoscale Science

COSMIC, a multipurpose X-ray instrument at Berkeley Lab’s Advanced Light Source, has made headway in the scientific community since its launch less than 2 years ago, with groundbreaking contributions in fields ranging from batteries to biominerals.

National Labs Band Together to Build Prototype Magnet for Future and Existing Light Sources

Teams at three national labs worked together to design, build, and fully test a new state-of-the-art, half-meter-long prototype magnet that meets the requirements for use in existing and future light source facilities.

Diamonds From the Deep: Study Suggests Water May Exist in Earth’s Lower Mantle

A new study, which included experiments at Berkeley Lab, suggests that water may be more common than expected at extreme depths approaching 400 miles and possibly beyond – within Earth’s lower mantle. The study explored microscopic pockets of a trapped form of crystallized water molecules in a sampling of diamonds.
